Can I use old fuel lines for E10 fuel?

Well the good news is that the technology exists to upgrade the fuel systems to cope with the new fuel. In truth, it’s good practice to renew ancient fuel lines as a precaution in any case. Modern fuel hose sold by a reputable supplier is rated for use with E10 (see Modifying for E10 below).

Does the fbhvc test fuel additives for E10 fuel?

As yet, the FBHVC is not aware of, or has tested, any additives that claim complete fuel system protection with respect to elastomer and gasket materials when E10 is used.

Does E10 fuel damage fuel lines?

Ethanol is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs water from the atmosphere. And that water, in turn, finds its way into your car. This can lead to condensation in fuel tanks, fuel lines and carburettors and cause corrosion in brass, copper, lead, tin and zinc components.

What fuel hose is ethanol resistant?

Can we use ethanol as fuel?

Ethanol is a renewable, domestically produced transportation fuel. Whether used in low-level blends, such as E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline), E15 (10.5% to 15% ethanol), or E85 (flex fuel)—a gasoline-ethanol blend containing 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on geography and season—ethanol helps reduce emissions.

Do I need to upgrade fuel lines for E85?

But because E85 requires much more fuel volume, you'll also need to upgrade your fuel system too. Get a 250-gph fuel pump, an E85-approved regulator, and -10 tank-to-regulator and -8 regulator-to-carb fuel lines in synthetic rubber, preferably braided.Jul 31, 2015

Is CPE hose good for E85?

A recent post on another thread raised fuel line E10 compatibility issues. Can anyone point towards a suitable make/supplier of suitable hose. Needs to be E10 and fuel injection compatible. What are others using? I think we have until Autumn when the E10 comes into use? So will be a next winter job for me I reckon. Thanks, Ian.

Gates Barricade; note they do versions for high pressure fuel injection systems, and low pressure for use on carbs.

I think it will be a long time before petrol goes completely, absolutely. It's distribution on the other hand is going to steadily change in the coming decades.

Steve Smith - Joint Hampshire & IOW AO

Hi Dave. I think I will change to barricade. Any suggestions on the best place to buy it from.

Jimbohuc

Bit of topic but probably relevant. E5 will remain in ‘super’ higher octane unleaded.

Will my zetec black top needed to be remapped to run on E10 supper unleaded. Thanks in advance.

Why E10 petrol?

What can classic owners do about E10?

Owners of modern classics can use the government’s online checker tool which uses information supplied by car makers as to the suitability of the fuel system. Information is patchy but has improved since the online check was first offered and for many brands the system will go as far back as the early ’90s.

Modifying for E10

If you plan to modify your car to suit E10, it pays to proceed with caution. Sadly, some of the parts available for the job could be sub-standard and potentially cause more problems than they solve. Perhaps the most worrying of these are fuel hoses purporting to be ethanol-safe, but actually not being up to standard.

Pete Lewis

following lots of ebay crap marked as R9 but useless so thanks for the link

dougbgt6

I've just had a hose disintegrate internally restricting fuel to the carbs. It was 4 years old and marked R9, Ebay Chinese! So I installed the Barricade which has been sitting on the "to do" shelf for a couple of years. Trust only the Club shop! Well, mostly.

andybeau

There is an article in this months Practical Classics with reference to E10 and supermarkets.

poppyman

im a firm believer the original fuel hose was made to a specificationand it lasted years the recent problems all stem from

andybeau

Another thing to say is that surely classic cars like Triumphs should be using super/premium unleaded which is closer to the old 4star instead of the 95 standard unleaded. Premium is staying E5 for sometime apparently.

Pete Lewis

certainly yes,, i wont be putting lawn mower fuel 2* in mine whilst fuels have changed over the decades 95 ron was mowers and side valves when our cars were developed

Iain T

Just bought some 1/4 and 5/16 hose from the club shop and it's marked up R14 which is very high spec.

Older fuel injection systems such as Bosch K-Jet may require elctronics hardware changes to cater for the use of these new fuels. Tail-pipe emissions of CO2 decrease due to the lower Carbon-to-Hydrogen ratio of Ethanols.

Does ethanol help with air quality?

The molecular strucutre of Ethanol allows the fuel to burn more completely and therefore give cleaner emissions; So its use in fuel has benefits for air quality. NOx, CO, HC and particulates are reduced by up to 30% which is great for reducing SMOG. Ethanol has a high Octane value (109 RON) but a low Energy value.

Is ethanol an aggressive compound?

Unfortunately, these Ethanol & Oxygenator additions to Petrol are chemically aggressive and have a tendancy to infiltrate and attack the Rubber compounds historically used to make fuel hosing, 'O' rings and accelerator pump diaphragms.

Is ethanol a high or low octane?

Ethanol has a high Octane value (109 RON) but a low Energy value. This makes it compatible with classic Petrol but means you have to chuck more fuel in for the same effect. You can increase compression ratio (CR) a little to help offset the loss in MPG due to the higer Octane rating of Ethanol.

Is R12 better than R10?
