About Trex Decking

As it was mentioned before, Trex is one of the first flooring manufacturers that produce composite decking.

Trex Decking Types

One thing to like about Trex, according to Trex decking review, is the easy options. The company won’t overwhelm you with tons of options and choices.

Buying Trex Composite Decking

Whereas the standard decking is considered specialty product and they aren’t easy to find at local big box retailers, that’s not the case with Trex products.

The Cost

The Trex decking review says about the variations of price with this product. The breakdown is:

Pros and Cons

As it was mentioned before, Trex is one company in the decking industry that has undergone obstruction during their first years. They did make some mishaps during their first manufacturing period.

Mold and Mildew on Composite Decking

This is one of the topics we get asked about the most and something that is easy to fix. Despite what manufacturers would lead you to believe, composite decking can indeed get moldy, although it’s simple to clean.

Removing Snow or Ice from Composite Decking

A deck may get more use in the summer and spring than the fall, but unless your backyard is off-limits during the winter, ice can be an issue. Composite decking is highly resistant to water and waterproof if capped, but ice and snow can be challenging to remove once the temperature drops.

Color Fading on Composite Decking

Despite new technologies and techniques, UV rays from the sun can cause any type of deck to fade. It can be worse with certain colors or on uncapped products. This is a composite decking problem that’s impossible to predict until a deck has been in the weather for several months, which can lead to a very expensive problem.

Trex Decking is Flaking

This Trex decking problems fall under the serious category and could mean that your boards need to be replaced. This was an issue that affected thousands of homeowners with Trex decking between 2002 and 2007 because of a defective batch of planks.

Dealing with Static Electricity

Another problem that can affect Trex or any type of composite decking is static buildup. Have you ever walked across a carpet and received a small shock after touching a metal surface? Well, the same thing can happen with composite decking if you live in a dry area, and the conditions are just right.

Chalk Line Residue

While highly resistant, there are a number of substances that can temporarily leave stains on composite decking. From chewing gum and tar to suntan lotion or ketchup, most of these messes can be cleaned up quickly with the right tools.

Tannins on Trex Decking

Before the snow falls, trees lose their leaves, and you may find yourself spending a considerable amount of time sweeping your deck clean. Leaves are easy to remove with a blower or broom, but they can leave tannins behind if you don’t move quickly enough.

Diving Deeper into Trex

So, now you are educated on Trex as far as who they are and why they are supposedly better than traditional wood decking. However, we are sure there is more you want to know such as what it is made of and if they sell any other products. So, let’s talk about it!

Other Trex Branded Products

Everyone is familiar with the timeless backyard game cornhole. Trex decking even has its own branded cornhole game! They are made with Trex decking, of course, which means that you can leave it outside all year long!

Things to DO With Trex

Some people have a passion to work in their homes. They try their luck at almost everything from being a plumber to being a gardener for their house. Some people try their luck with building a deck as well. The materials and tools required to build a composite deck can be easily bought from a home improvement store.

Things NOT to Do With Trex

Even though Trex is relatively termite free as compared to wood decks, there are always chances for it to be infected by insects. Look for small holes on the surface and if you find a few, then it’s time to call a professional to get rid of the insects.

The Myths of Trex

So far, we have touched on Trex as a whole, interesting things you should know, and the dos and don’ts. To wrap up this article let’s talk about the myths of Trex decking. With every product, there are things that are said by past and current clients that are sometimes untrue. These are those things being addressed.

The Myths

No matter the product, everyone has their opinion. When it comes to decking, wood decking used to be the standard go-to, but now there are other options. Over the past decade, composite decking like Trex decking has been developing a demand in the market.

Tongue and Groove Decking Explained

The process of joining two objects together through the tongue and groove method has been used in cabinetry and flooring for centuries. While there are a couple of different techniques to this approach, it basically refers to any boards with a groove along one edge and a ridge on the other.

Types of Tongue and Groove Decking

As popular as this style of lumber is, it can be difficult to locate when you’re looking for full-size deck boards. You are also limited from a material standpoint to a degree, so there are two options to choose from with natural wood and composite decking.

The Best Tongue and Groove Decking and Porch Boards

We found more boards geared towards porches and walls than decks in our quest to find the best tongue and groove decking. We are including all the suitable options locally and online below, but you will want to check with a contractor and your local building codes before using some of these materials for a large outdoor deck.

Wooden Tongue and Groove Deck Boards

If you are interested in using wooden tongue and groove decking for your next project, the most affordable option is to purchase your material locally. Unless it’s a product that has to be special ordered, this takes care of any shipping costs or built-in charges from online deck dealers.

Composite Tongue and Groove Boards

We are big fans of traditional wood decking, but composite decks provide homeowners with a surface that’s easy to maintain and extremely resilient to the weather. As one of the most popular types of decking, dozens of companies produce composite decking, but only a handful make planks with a tongue and groove profile.

Conclusion

The companies in our tongue and groove decking review are just a sample of what’s available, especially if you intend to think outside of the box with your design. The important thing to remember is that the term tongue and groove refers to a profile, and is something that’s typically reserved for porches rather than decking.

Will a tongue and groove deck make the underneath waterproof?

I'm replacing an existing ipe deck. I would also like the space under the deck to be a usable patio and therefore want to somehow waterproof the underside of the deck. The guy who came to give a quote on rebuilding it suggested using tongue and groove mahogany, which he says will prevent any water from passing to the underneath area.

Comments (12)

No. It will still leak water. T&G has gaps at every strip of wood for expansion and contraction as the wood changes moisture content. UNless you get teh wood wet and keep it that way it will leak when it dries and the gaps open.
