Many people say you shouldn't because any natural stone could crack -- but many people say that do it all the time and nothing bad has ever happened.

Yes, I have had 2 clients (that I know of) who had their granite crack from setting hot pots on it. Mind you, this is in 30 years of dealing with stone counters. I have not had any clients with marble have thermal shock, but marble is a VERY rare choice here as most people prefer their counters to be bulletproof rather than embrace patina.
