What is rural metro?

Rural Metro is a fire and ambulance service designed to assist residents who live in unincorporated areas of Arizona where there is no established municipal fire department. Prior to Rural Metro if you required emergency fire assistance or an ambulance, there was nothing available to help you.

When was Rural Metro started?

Rural Metro was started in 1948 as a private company to provide fire and eventually emergency medical services to homeowners and businesses in unincorporated areas. In 1948, Lou Witzeman witnessed a house fire near his home outside the city limits of Phoenix. Since there was no fire department to put out the fire, it burned uncontrollably. Sensing something had to be done to prevent that from happening again, Witzeman bought a fire engine and went door to door asking his neighbors to contribute and buy a fire membership from him with the expectation that if they required help putting out a fire, he would show up and assist. The business boomed and today is a national company with stock that used to be traded publicly before it was purchased by another company and merged into their entity.
