Do coffee grounds get rid of fruit flies?
Fruit flies seek out warm and moist areas, as you'd find after a brew cycle. The most significant fruit fly breeding grounds are sink drains and house plants, not the coffee machine. Keep a clean kitchen and coffee pot to discourage the buildup of fruit flies on the coffee dispenser nozzle and coffee grinds.
Why do fruit flies like coffee grounds?
"Normally," Montell explains, "when given the choice between sweet and bitter substances, flies avoid caffeine and other bitter-tasting chemicals. But flies missing this particular taste-receptor protein, called Gr66a, consume caffeine because their taste-receptor cells don't fire in response to it."
Will coffee grounds repel flies?
They help create a barrier that slugs and snails do not like to crawl over. Summary Coffee grounds contain compounds that are toxic to many insects. You can use your coffee grounds to repel mosquitos, fruit flies, beetles and other pests.
What is the fastest way to get rid of fruit flies?
Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly that lands on the surface to drown.
Do gnats hate coffee?
Gnats don't like the scent of coffee grounds due to its intensity, strength and masking of gnat food sources. You can easily use spent coffee grounds by placing them in areas where gnats frequent to repel them.

The Hopkins flies, genetically mutated to lack a certain taste receptor protein, have been the focus of studies to sort out how animals taste and why we like the taste of some things but are turned off by the taste of others.
How many spikes per second does sugar cause?
Applying sugar to the taste bristles of normal flies, or to mutant flies missing the Gr66a protein, causes the neurons to produce electrical current "spikes" at a frequency of about 20 spikes per second. Other bitter compounds like quinine generated electrical current spikes at about the same frequency in the mutants.
Can mutant flys taste caffeine?
Now that Montell and his colleagues have a mutant fly that is unable to taste caffeine, they hope to further examine the other genes and molecules involved in the caffeine response and better understand the biochemistry behind caffeine-induced behavior in other organisms, namely humans.
Do mutant fruit flies like sugar?
In their hunt for genes and proteins that explain how animals discern bitter from sweet, a team of John Hopkins researchers began by testing whether mutant fruit flies prefer eating sugar over sugar laced with caffeine.

Make a solution of water, apple cider vinegar, and a little squirt of dish detergent and pour it into several small bowls around the kitchen. It makes perfect fruit fly traps.

Dirty Sink
A dirty sink is the most common spot for fruit flies to breed and live. Luckily, drain flies are relatively simple to remove. While you need oxygen bleach, and a dishrag, you can clear out the fruit flies for good in about 10 minutes.
