The Yamamura House (1918) near Ashiya is the only original Wright building left standing in Japan. In Tokyo, the Aisaku Hayashi House (1917) was Wright's first residence built outside the U.S. quickly followed by the Jiyu Gakuen Girls' School (1921). These smaller projects were built while Wright's iconic Imperial Hotel was being designed and constructed in Tokyo (1912-1922). Although the hotel survived countless earthquakes, in part because of its floating foundation, developers tore down the building in 1967. All that remains is a reconstruction of the front lobby at Museum Meijimura near Nagoya.
