I've used Varathane brand Red Chestnut wood stain before. It does take longer to dry and takes more work to buff but it came out pretty close to the same color as when used on pine. Recommended? not really. Doable? yes.

Since I am primarily a woodworker rather than leather worker, I keep a lot of wood stains and dyes stocked. I've always avoided pigmented wood stains (think thin paint) for leather since I am afraid the results would be blotchy and unnatural looking. I actually don't use pigmented stains much for wood either.

Hi, a bit late maybe but I'd like to share an experience with wood stain on leather.
How to dye leather shoes?
First, you will need a leather preparer and deglazer so that the dye can fully penetrate when it is its turn to be put on your shoes. These remove the old finish so you can work with ease. Next, apply the leather dye and the alcohol version dries faster.
Is it a long process to dye leather?
Dyeing leather may be a longer process than you had anticipated. So make sure you give yourself plenty of time to do the job as rushed work does not turn out quality results.
Can you use Kool Aid as a dye?
To use Kool-Aid as a dye, the material has to be protein-based. Other types of fibers will not work so well using this kid’s drink as a dye. One problem will be that the coloring will wash out possibly staining other fabrics nearby.

My dayjob is working in a paintshop, and I would NOT do the solvent outdoor wood stain on leather... A maybe for a test with the new all (most) acrylic wood stain, inndoor wood stain, but I dont think it would any good..

i'd love to know your results. post them here when you can . i didnt want to spend a lot for a can of woodstain only to use a table spoon for testing so i wanted to ask

I tried some oil based wood dye on some scrap veg tan. Just see what it would do. It soaked in alright, but only coloured the leather lightly. When it dried it shrunk the leather and hardened it.
