can you mix zoysia and st augustine grass

by Dr. Frieda Corwin MD Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago

You can combine Zoysia grass and St. Augustine to mixed results. If the lawn is shaded or the soil is saline, St. Augustine might encroach into Zoysia. To reduce the chances of St. Augustine taking over Zoysia, we recommend planting a quick-growing Zoysia cultivar such as Palisades Zoysia.

If the environmental conditions favor one grass species over another, "choking out" may occur. For zoysia grass to overtake and smother St. Augustine grass, the soil must become drier to favor the zoysia's slower growth and cause the St. Augustine to wither.
