Why can't law enforcement track your purchases?

Law enforcement can't track your personal purchases, because that would be a violation of your privacy rights, unless they had a warrant to do so. So what law enforcement does, is instead of tracking purchases of individuals, they look for certain products being bought, and how much product is being bought at a time. Two good examples of this, are buying firearms, and fertilizer. Most firearms have a certain waiting period, because the seller has to inform law enforcement of the purchase, and who is making the purchase, so that way law enforcement can make sure whoever is purchasing the firearm is able to. With fertilizer, even though the seller doesn't have to inform law enforcement of the purchase, there records show how much is being bought in a single purchase. The reason why you shouldn't buy too much at once, is because of the ammonium nitrate. Ammonium nitrate can be used to make explosives. But since there’s so little in one bag of fertilizer, someone would have to buy it in bulk to actually make explosives. So in answer to your question, I believe that law enforcement was just tracking the details, and not the actual purchase itself.

I havent come across this before but I would believe a warrant would be needed. Its his account and not the bank's, so the bank cant give permission. Maybe there is some clause buried in his agreement with the bank that give authorization to the bank? Id doubt that would be the case.

Kendall Lance Horween
