Butorphanol tartrate nasal spray should not be used by patients less than 18 years old. Butorphanol has been found in the breast milk of women who are using butorphanol tartrate nasal spray. Therefore, butorphanol tartrate nasal spray should not be used by patients who are breastfeeding.

The half-life of butorphanol is estimated to be around 18 hours, on average. It usually takes five half-lives for a drug to be fully eliminated from the system of a patient, so that would mean it would take an estimated 90 hours for a full dose of butorphanol to be eliminated from the system.

Butorphanol (0.1 mg/kg, IV or IM) produces a mild level of sedation in camelids. Butorphanol may be used to enhance patient cooperation when the adverse effects of xylazine may not be tolerated. Butorphanol sedation does not generally produce recumbency.
