In a mock-up situation, it is perfectly acceptable to install, check clearances and reuse the gasket. Once heat is put to the gaskets, the ‘spring’ is gone and since the embossment is the sealing area, there is a greater chance of a coolant or compression leak.”
Is it OK to reuse head gaskets?
You can re-use the Titan or Pro Copper style head gaskets several times, only if the head gaskets are cleaned carefully. If a buildup of sealant occurs, combustion pressure will not be contained as the Head/Gasket/Block will become separated by a layer of sealant which cannot withstand combustion pressure and heat.
Do you need to Retorque Cometic head gaskets?
Yes, the gaskets were cometics. The "locals" that are playing with these two engines recomend a retorque after the initial run regardless what they say about the gaskets. Take this as necessary because these builders know what they are talking about. (I'll get into this at a later time.)

MLS gaskets can be very forgiving, but only under strict circumstances. The surfaces of both the block and heads must be sufficient to allow them to properly seal. The tolerance for roughness of the sealing surfaces is much lower – almost half of what you can get away with if using a composite gasket.

How does a head gasket work?
Many head gaskets have a metal ring around the inside bore of the gasket. This keeps the heat and fire from combustion from burning through the head gasket. The metal ring has a crush factor. Once it is torqued down, it is crushed to size. If you remove the head, the gasket stays crushed. At this point the gasket is not reuseable. I don't have first hand experience with cometic gaskets but the same theory should apply. They do make solid copper head gaskets that can be reused because they don't crush like a normal head gasket.#N#When setting up a new build, to check valve to piston clearence, use an old head gasket that has already been crushed. then when doing the final build use new gaskets.
