One of the joys of living in the rust belt is having your brake pedal go to the floor without warning due to a rusted brake line that can't hold pressure anymore. I need to splice in a new piece of 1/4" brake line in a hard to reach spot. I rented a double flare kit but the clamping piece just can't hold the line tight enough to be flared.

The remaining piece of line is in almost new condition. Only one small section that sits behind an emissions canister is rusted. To replace the entire line would be a huge hassle. Lots of tight spaces and curves. I'm closing on a house in a few days and I don't really have the time to replace the entire line.

Certainly not recommended , (by our antiquated standards), to use compression fittings on brake lines,but if you are going to use them ,I could only recommend 'Swagelock' fittings. These have a double ferrule which bite down into the tube and will not come off once locked up to specs.

I agree with the Swagelock fitting. Just make sure to use stainless fittings with stainless lines and to torque them properly.

Dumb question, but... If the lines are stainless, how did they rust? I would replace the whole line. Remember how scary it was when that line you have now failed? You want that feeling again? Sounds like you got away cheap this time, didn't hit anything.

I beleive he's talking about an automotive application, and the brake lines aren't necessarily stainless steel, they are just steel tubing.
