What is the Odyssey website?

Odyssey began as a 16-page tabloid-sized weekly, distributed at fraternities and sororities—first at Indiana State University, then at a handful of Greek houses across college campuses. It was first conceived in 2010 by Evan Burns and Adrian France—then Indiana State seniors—as a newspaper covering Greek life. By 2014, Burns was at the helm as CEO and Odyssey’s ambitions had shifted: It was now a sprawling online repository of writing. Today, Odyssey is an expansive platform with 15,000 creators, most of them college students across US campuses. Since its launch, it’s raised $32 million of backing by investors. Burns believes Odyssey could become the Facebook or Instagram of user-generated stories. “We’ve thought about our growth strategy as creating communities rather than building a blog platform,” he says.

How much does Mackenzie Pearson get for her dadbod?

In Odyssey’s early days, the financial incentives differed. Mackenzie Pearson, the author of the dadbod story, says she would receive $10 if her story got the most page views on the site in a given week. And most Odyssey contributors aren’t in it for the money at all. “I think it’s a great experience for someone who’s trying to test the waters and thinking about becoming a writer,” says Hoskins. But does the editorial feedback and exposure — things Odyssey argues it gives its writers —actually help its participants build something of value?

That traffic is fueled by a massive amount of content. According to Odyssey, most stories average between 1,750 and 2,500 reads per month, a figure that lumps together those few pieces that go viral with the majority, which sometimes get only a handful of shares.

Does Odyssey want to tell people what to create?

Burns is adamant that as a company, Odyssey doesn’t want to tell people what to create. “From a top-down level we try not to dictate: ‘Write this topic. Write this stuff.’ It might happen here and there with an individual editor, but we don’t want to create an echo chamber,” he says. “With over a thousand communities, we are never going to guarantee exact uniformity around how that’s going to happen.”

Synopsis

The Odyssey begins after the end of the ten-year Trojan War (the subject of the Iliad ), from which Odysseus, king of Ithaca, has still not returned due to angering Poseidon, the god of the sea.

Structure

The Odyssey is 12,109 lines composed in dactylic hexameter, also called Homeric hexameter. It opens in medias res, in the middle of the overall story, with prior events described through flashbacks and storytelling.

Geography

The events in the main sequence of the Odyssey (excluding Odysseus' embedded narrative of his wanderings) have been said to take place in the Peloponnese and in what are now called the Ionian Islands.

Influences

Scholars have seen strong influences from Near Eastern mythology and literature in the Odyssey. Martin West notes substantial parallels between the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Odyssey. Both Odysseus and Gilgamesh are known for traveling to the ends of the earth, and on their journeys go to the land of the dead.

Themes and patterns

Homecoming (Ancient Greek: νόστος, nostos) is a central theme of the Odyssey. Anna Bonafazi of the University of Cologne writes that, in Homer, nostos is "return home from Troy, by sea".

Textual history

The date of the poem is a matter of serious disagreement among classicists. In the middle of the 8th century BCE, the inhabitants of Greece began to adopt a modified version of the Phoenician alphabet to write down their own language.

Influence

The influence of the Homeric texts can be difficult to summarise because of how greatly they have impacted the popular imagination and cultural values. The Odyssey and the Iliad formed the basis of education for members of ancient Mediterranean society.

New Experience into the World of Online Submissions

Writing for The Odyssey was a fun experience for me! Although it didn't last long I still thoroughly enjoyed articles sent to the team about how to get more views on our articles. This experience shed light onto how companies and business use social media marketing.

Fun place to write for!

I had a great time writing for this online platform and would have loved to write for it longer! Unfortunately I had to end my time here due to other work taking priority but everyone I interacted with was kind and respectful.

If you love writing, this is for you

A fun job to have in undergrad if you love writing and expressing your thoughts. I enjoyed working with The Odyssey because it was flexible and let me choose what I wanted to write about each week.

Great platform to get my writing noticed

I enjoy writing for the Odyssey because I am able to work right from my laptop. Through the Odyssey, I am able to get my work noticed/published. I have learned many skills throughout my internship while strengthening my writing and editing techniques.

Good Experience for Students going into the field of Journalism

Good writing experience and exposure to online content creation in terms of SEO (headlines, meta tags, alt tags, etc).

Comfortable Start

This was a part time position while I was a student. It was a good way to broaden my portfolio, but it was an unpaid position and there was little room for growth. It is a good place to start if you want more writing experience under your belt!

It was simple and straight to the point

I worked with the Odyssey that belonged to Flagler College. The editors of the online magazine were nice, but whether or not they did their job in editing and communicating with me any errors can be seen on my articles. It was a great learning experience, but I wish there were more interactions between writers and editors.
