The format is a full re-write of the Old Testament in an understandable way with a little bit more insight. It's enough context to enhance a true Bible study but enough for gaining an exhaustive understanding. You still need to "study". I would compare it to very light cliff notes.

This commentary is a great reference that helps to clarify some of the cultural issues of Biblical times that are so different or alien from what we experience in our own lives today. I have found it to be a valuable resource in my personal Bible study.
