What is the A3 paper size?

A3 Plus, or Super A3 as it is sometimes known, is not an ISO 216 paper size. It has dimensions of 330mm x 483mm (13" x 19"). This gives it an aspect ratio of 1:1.468 rather than the 1:root 2 aspect ratio of the ISO series paper sizes. In actuality the A3+/Super A3 name is quite misleading as this paper size is known as B+ or Super B in the United States and is ANSI B with a 1" margin for print bleed.

What is the A4 size?

The A4 size has become the standard business letter size in English speaking countries such as Australia, New Zealand and the UK , that formerly used British Imperial sizes. What is the ISO 216 standard?

Finally, in addition to the A sizes, the ISO 216 standard includes B and C paper sizes. The B-series paper sizes and the C-series paper sizes are made to cover paper sizes that do not fall under the A-series.

What is the ISO 216?

The ISO 216 is the international standard for a sheet of paper. North America and parts of Central and South America use other paper sizes such as “Letter” and “Legal”. The ISO A2 size is used in large parts of the world (yellow color). In the blue parts the US standard “Letter” is used.

How Can A2 Paper Be Used?

This super-sized sheet has many uses. When you need to showcase something big and bold, A2 is your go-to paper. Some of its most common uses are:

A2 Dimensions

A2 paper is not only large, but it can also be pretty expensive, too. If you’re using A2 paper to create an elaborate, printable poster-size project, you’ll want to make sure you’re using it to its fullest capacity.

ISO A paper sizes

The A-series consists of a logical set of paper sizes that are defined by the ISO 216 standard. The largest size ( A0) measures one square meter. The height/width ratio remains constant (1:1.41) for all sizes. This means you get the A1 size by folding an A0 paper in two along its shortest side.

ISO B paper sizes

The same logic from the A-sizes also applies for the B-series, except here the starting point was the dimension of one of the sides, which starts at 1 meter. B-sizes are often used for posters.

ISO C paper sizes

C-sizes are used for envelopes to match the A-series paper. I have omitted unrealistic sizes like C0 (imagine an envelope measuring 917 by 1297 millimeters).

ISO D paper sizes

I have no idea what D-sizes are used for but the standard is there so it should be mentioned.

ISO RA & SRA paper sizes

These oversized papersizes are used by printers. The dimensions in millimetres are rounded to the nearest value.

American paper sizes

The US and Canada do not use the international standards but instead rely on the paper sizes below. The ANSI standard was added in 1995 to create a set of sizes that are based on shared dimensions. It lacks however the consistent aspect ratio of the ISO A-series.

English paper sizes (writing papers)

The English nowadays use the A-sizes for office and general use. I have no idea whether many of these definitions are still in use today. Imperial and half-imperial still seem to be widely used by artists.

Loose American paper sizes

Below is a table with the loose American paper sizes. The first column contains the name of the size; then you will see the size in inches, millimetres and aspect ratios.

Standardized American paper sizes of the ANSI

The American National Standards Institute ( ANSI) adopted a national standard for paper sizes in 1996. The ANSI paper sizes are based on the de facto standard 8 1⁄2 in × 11 in (220 mm × 280 mm).

American envelope sizes

In addition to different paper sizes, the American standard also includes different envelope sizes.

A Bit of History

  • The dimensions of an A2 sheet actually go back to 1798 when the French government introduced the ‘grand registre’paper size. It was meant to promote their newly established metric system. The idea of using a 1.414 aspect ratio was borrowed from Georg Lichtenberg, a German professor. In the early twentieth century, the Germans reused that concept to establish their DIN 476 standard.
