5x7 versus 8x10

If you were going to experiment with X-ray film and light sensitive paper, which format would you go with? 5x7 or 8x10? For example, based on availability of these types of film for the two formats short-term and a bit longer term... Hope this question doesn't sound too esoteric! Thanks.

Re: 5x7 versus 8x10

I would definitely go with 8x10 in order to avoid having to cut the film down. Apparently x-ray film scratches really easily - best to avoid any extra handling steps.

Re: 5x7 versus 8x10

Great to know. Thanks all. If anyone else has thoughts in this space, keep them coming.

Re: 5x7 versus 8x10

I went with 5X7 just because I happen to already have the camera and holders on hand. I do have an 8 X 10 but is very inconvient to haul when hiking any distance.

Re: 5x7 versus 8x10

I am cutting down 7X17 to use in 3 cameras. 2x3, 5X7 and 7X11. So far so good, but it does scratch way easier than my favorite EFKE. Too bad about them.

Re: 5x7 versus 8x10

Is cost of film your reason for using X-ray film? If you have to buy a camera and lens or lenses in one size or the other, I would think the higher cost of an 8x10 camera of identical quality and lenses, maybe even an enlarger vs. 5x7 would far outweigh any savings in film. Pick the size that more closely addresses all of your needs.

First thanks to all for the good discussion on 5X7 contact printing. Second I have an opportunity to trade my 5x7 for an 8X10. I am not to worried about the format dimensions as I can mask the prints off to anything from 6.5X8.5 to 6X9 or 5X7 if the image demands and I actually really like 5.5X8.

I like the 5x7 ratio but have, at times, wanted to shoot a more pano ratio. So I finally bit the bullet and picked up a shen hao 4x10. It sports a 5x7 (yes 5x7!) back as well as the 4x10 back, and is quite light, really quite comparable to a 5x7.

keithwms Member

Doh, just realized that you posted this in the contact printing section and thus my comments about getting your ratio by a bit of enlargement probably aren't pertinent. Sorry. If you want ~5x8 contacts then maybe my 8x10 + inserts idea would work for you.

I have 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10 cameras and the 8x10 is a big jump up in terms of bulk and weight. If you can afford a lightweight 8x10 and small lenses with good coverage, and are willing to lug fewer holders, then 8x10 won't be too bad. I have a Deardorff and aside from any accessories--it's not a light camera.

5x7 was such a nice ratio, I went out a bought a Ritter 8x10 with a 7x11 back last year and haven't looked back since. The Ritter weighs in at around 6.5 pounds, so weight is actually the same of less than my old Burke & James 5x7.

Nick Zentena Member

It's been mentioned but it all depends on the camera you pick. My Shen is fairly light but being an 8x10 it can't really fold down to less then 10x10.

My 8x10 pack and pod weigh 60 pounds. I carry the thing all over the place, but then I am 240 pounds and about 6'3" (and almost 55 yrs old). I've been setting the camera up for so many years that it does not seem overly large or bulky to me. I walk in creeks, up mountains, cross country in the local rainforest...though it is easier on trails.

What size rug? 5x7 or 8x10

I'm afraid 5x7 will be too small and 8x10 will be too big and more like a carpet. This is a very busy area of our house with our 3 young kids. 5x7 leave quite a bit of floor exposed all the way around. 8x10 will go under the love seat and entertainment center and have floor exposed on the other 2 sides....What do you think?

There are area rugs in between these sizes. Also you can get any carpet bound in a custom size at a carpet store. Many have great remnants at low prices.

differences betwen 4x5 5x7 and 8x10 when you shoot

Hi Jesus Is thad 30x40 inch or cm it it is only cm then I would only work with 4x5.

differences betwen 4x5 5x7 and 8x10 when you shoot

Jesus, I just bought a 5x7, but haven't had a chance to do much shooting. I bought it for two reasons: contact prints and to get better quality scans from my Epson 4990.

differences betwen 4x5 5x7 and 8x10 when you shoot

If you're using a 4990 scanner, which you did not indicate, a 40x50 from 8x10 looks pretty darned good from that scanner. The 4990 seems to do a reasonably okay job ( resolution-wise, not tonality ) at 1200 dpi scan resolution, with makes a pretty honest 300ppi 40x50 inch lightjet. This is one reason to vote 8x10, and one reason I like 8x10.

differences betwen 4x5 5x7 and 8x10 when you shoot

Based on actual testing, I have found there is a considerable difference between 4x5 and 5x7, but the difference between 5x7 and 8x10 is not that big. From my testing I decided to shoot 4x5, 5x7, and 4x10.

differences betwen 4x5 5x7 and 8x10 when you shoot

Jesus, I develop all my film in my own lab. I used to use a JOBO CPP2 to process my film. Now I use a JOBO ATL 2 Plus. I use JOBO expert drums for processing. I use the 3005 tanks designed for 8x10 film to process my 4x10 film.

differences betwen 4x5 5x7 and 8x10 when you shoot

Thank You for your question, it has been a concern of mine to upgrade to 5x7 . . . the more I hear, the more steadfast my resolve to give it a try at least.

What Size Picture Should I Hang on My Wall?

8X10, 9X12 AND ABOVE

We can clump all these sizes into one category as they have very similar setups. The standard setup for these sizes are shown in the diagram below. Remember, these are standard setups. For more ideas, scroll to the photo gallery below.

5x8 and 6x9 Rugs

As people are downsizing, 5x8 and 6x9 rugs are becoming extremely popular. In many instances, they work interchangeably and give the designer a ton of unique options. In a standard setup, the furniture starts to separate itself from the rug, especially in 5x8.

4x6 and Below

These sizes work great for unique areas in your home. You almost don’t think a rug is worth it but trust me, a rug makes the space.

Runners and Rounds

Rounds work great by mimicking the geometric pattern of round tables but they have many dynamic features in a traditional living room setup. Runners are generally used in hallways or skinny areas of the home.

Layered Rugs

This is the bonus round. Many people forget that you can layer rugs. Think of putting a blanket on your comforter. The standard setup works with a solid color on the bottom and adds color as the designer layers.

Conclusion

Remember everything in this article is a recommendation and a source of inspiration. If you find something you like, use it. You don’t need a designer to make a space that is special to you. Your space is special because it is your space.
