520 chain vs 50 chain

by Aniya Wolff Published 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago

As far as i know the only difference between 520, 530, and 50 is the width and that the pitch is the same. The pitch of a #50, #520 and #530 chain are the same and is 5/8" link to link. #50 is indicated by ANSI standards and has a 3/8" width. #520 is indicated by the motorcycle industry and has a 1/4" width.

What's the difference between a 520 and 525 chain?

Like others have said... 530 chain is the heaviest... 520 the lightest. 530 should last longer. 520 has less rotational mass (supposed more performance). Of course 525 is in between the two. As for the sprockets. You'll definitely notice a difference. Changing both you'll notice a big difference in how your bike pulls.

What is the difference between a 40 and a 50 chain?

#40 will be the beefiest chain in this class. This will help with thicker sprockets since there is more room between the side plates. #41 will look just like the #420 chain, but will stand shorter. #50 Chain: This chain didn't make the chart, but it will have a 5/8" pitch.

Is it worth converting from 14/47 to 520 chain?

Now I've converted to 520 chain, and have 15/47 gearing. Now it does around 133. I definately wouldn't go to 14/47 setup, as it would be just to much imo, unless you're into stunting it, or drag racing. If your into drag racing, it's well worth converting to 520.

What does 428 and 520 mean on a chain?

It is the size of the chain (as in link size). A 428 is for a 125 and lower usually, and the 520 is for larger motorcycles. Strength is another can of worms.

Is 520 chain the same as 50?

A #50 chain IS a 530 chain. Larger dirt bikes, dual sports and ATV's are generally a 520 chain. Street bikes more commonly are a 530, smaller displacements may use 525.

Does a 520 chain make a difference?

People will bring up the fact that 520 chains will wear out faster than 525/530 chains. Ultimately, if you start to nitpick, yes, they will. The tensile strength of the very top chains will be slightly higher (my EK520 chains' rating is 9400 where the top DID 530 is roughly 10400).

What does 520 mean on chain size?

(3) The size of a chain is designated by a three-digit number (520, for example). The distance from the center of one pin to the center of the next is called pitch. Pitch is represented by the first digit, which is 4, 5 or 6.

What's the difference between a 520 chain and a 530 chain?

A 530 chain on a 520 sprocket will work just fine, a 532 will not. The differance between a 520 and 530 is the width, the roller diamiter and pitch are the same.

What is the difference between a 520 and a 525 motorcycle chain?

The 5 part just describes the distance between the centers of the link pins (or wherever on the links, basically how long a link is) and the next two numbers describe the width of the chain. So a 520 chain is going to be narrower than a 525(and thus require a narrower front and rear sprocket) and lighter...

What is a 50 chain?

# 50 chain is an American standard size that is built to ANSI B29. 1 standards. This size is commonly referred to as 5/8" pitch roller chain, which comes from the pin to pin measurement. 50 chain is one of the most widely used chain sizes out of the 14 available ANSI standard chains.

What is the strongest 520 chain?

Monster. The 520MX boasts our highest rated tensile strength among non-sealed chains at 8,930 lbs. Perfect for the beating that chains take during tough, off-road races.

Is 40 chain the same as 420 chain?

Difference between 420 chain and 40 chain Both 420 and 40 chains have the same tensile strength and pitch, the only major difference is the width between the inner plates of #40 is larger than #420 by 1/16″.

What is a 5 strand chain?

Five strand roller chain is also commonly referred to as quintuple roller chain and is one of the less commonly used types of chain. However, we stock most of the standard sizes of five strand roller chains along with the accompanying connecting links and offset links. View Category.

What is the tensile strength of a roller chain?

Sizing the right roller chain for your application comes down to a few key factors: Tensile Strength - The tensile strength of a roller chain is the rating that represents the force required for breaking the chain. There are three different tensile strength values; minimum, average, and ultimate.

What is double pitch carrier chain?

Double pitch carrier type chains are also referred to as oversized roller double pitch chains because the roller extending past the sidebars. This creates a chain that is capable of conveying product from one point to the next with the use of the rollers. Chain Size.

What is a roller chain?

A Roller chain is especially useful in applications that require the transfer of energy to be consistent over a long period of time, or where a shift in direction from linear to rotary is needed, and simply for moving objects from one point to another.

What are the conditions for roller chains?

Application Conditions - It is important to take a look at certain conditions such as temperature, corrosion, abrasion, and hours in operation . Standard roller chains are manufactured from carbon steel, meaning that their temperature range is limited and they will corrode in abrasive and corrosive applications.

Why use chain guards with straw?

We prefer the aerosol can with a straw so that we can pin-point where we need the lubrication. Chain Guards will help with keeping hair, clothing, and appendages out of harm's way. Also helps with messes since you'll be slinging around chain lube.

Which is better, #420 or #41?

It's not as wide (from side plate to side plate) as the #40 chain which helps to not slap your driven pulley or frame if it's in a tight fit. #420 will have more strength than the #41 chain because the side plates will be taller. #40 will be the beefiest chain in this class.

Why are chain breakers important?

I mean, you could use an angle grinder but this tool makes life a lot easier. They are essential because you will rarely get chain that is the correct length. Here's our rule of thumb for chain length:
