Does the Nissan Maxima accelerate?

Conclusion: Nissan Maxima Not Accelerating. As you can see, there are a lot of reasons that your Nissan Maxima may not accelerate. Good luck diagnosing yours. If there is anything that you can add, please feel free to leave a comment.

1. Clogged air filter

If the air filter is dirty in your Nissan Maxima, it can have a negative effect on the performance of the engine, as less air passes through the dirty filter which suffocates the engine. This ultimately also increases fuel consumption. In the worst case, the engine can stall if the air filter is extremely clogged.

2. Dirty or faulty mass air flow sensor (MAF)

Defective or dirty mass air flow sensor (MAF) in your Nissan Maxima can result in loss of power, uneven engine running, erratic idling, misfires, poor exhaust emission values including black smoke. The mass air flow sensor is part of the engine’s intake system and is located between the air filter box and the throttle valve.

3. Clogged fuel filter

If the fuel filter is clogged in your Nissan Maxima, not enough fuel can get into the engine. This causes loss of power and jerking of the vehicle when accelerating. In worse case scenario, engine cuts out while driving due to insufficient fuel supply.

4. Clogged catalytic converter

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system in Nissan Maxima and its main purpose is to convert exhaust gases that are harmful to health and the environment into less harmful byproducts. Over time, toxins accumulate and clog up the catalytic converter, especially if the vehicle has racked up a lot of miles.

5. Faulty oxygen sensor

The oxygen sensor in Nissan Maxima monitors the level of pollutants in the engine’s exhaust gases and reports the data to the control unit that continuously adjusts the air to fuel ratio in the engine.

6. Dirty throttle body

Dirty throttle body can also be the cause of slow acceleration in your Nissan Maxima. The common signs of dirty throttle body are poor engine performance, erratic idle, the engine react poorly to movements of the accelerator pedal, and the engine sputters or stalls.

7. Faulty throttle position sensor (TPS)

The throttle position sensor or TPS is used to determine the opening angle of the throttle valve. The information obtained is sent to the control unit and contributes to the calculation of the amount of fuel required.

Why won't my car accelerate?

There are a lot of possibilities, depending on whether it won’t accelerate because the engine doesn’t have the power , or if it doesn’t accelerate because there is a problem in the drivetrain, or if it simply isn’t trying to accelerate. I’ll take a guess that it is the latter.

Acceleration problem

My 2009 has a problem accelerating from a dead stop. I can put the pedal to the floor and the car barely rolls until it hits about 10 mph and then it accelerates fine. The idle is fine. Runs fine once it it rolling, but literally almost does not move from a dead stop. I am afraid if I was stopped on a hill the car would not move.

Re: Acceleration problem (Weberrider)

Have you had the TCM/ECM program update recall performed? About two weeks ago I had mine re-programmed during its regular scheduled service. The hesitation I experienced when accelerating from a stop disappeared.

Re: Acceleration problem (robf70837)

The only recall notice I have received is for the steering. I would not call this a hesitation. The car barely moves. It take about 5 seconds to reach 10 mph.

Re: Acceleration problem (Weberrider)

This was the reason I decided to finally sell my pearl glow nissan maxima. Loved that car. I would press the gas to the floor and it barely moved. When it finally was accelerating. It was extremely slow though. Barely reaching 40-45 mph and struggled. So I sold it. Anyways, pressing pedal to the floor I always considered extreme.

Re: Acceleration problem (casperfun)

Just take it to the dealer (on a day when the problem is easily reproducible) and have the service manager drive it. He will schedule an appointment for the TCM/ECM update and/or whatever else is necessary to fix the problem. This is definitely not normal and is covered under warranty.

Re: Acceleration problem (goin' rogue)

The problem was a stop switch that tells the transmission that the car has stopped and must resume movement in a lower range in the transmission. The switch was failing and the trans did not get the signal that I had stopped. Basically like starting in 4th gear from a dead stop.

Re: Acceleration problem (Weberrider)

Thanks for the update. Just out of curiosity, were the repairs done under warranty, or not?
